Nuns & Nones turns five!

Five years ago this month, the first Nuns & Nones gatherings began to take place. The delight and magic of such an “unlikely” encounter planted the seed of a community that spans across geography, age, and religious affiliation.

To date, we’ve supported over a dozen local groups, experimented with co-living, organized for democracy and climate justice, and created a wealth of artful resources for “mystic misfits” who seek community.

To celebrate, we’ve prepared a “birthday scrapbook” filled with photos, memories, and reflections from those first gatherings.

We hope you’ll make a gift to support the next five years (and beyond!) of our work. We are so grateful for the support of so many hearts and hands.

Reflections from original participants

What has stayed with you SINCE THESE FIRST GATHERINGS?

“[It was] one of the most meaningful series of conversations…my sense is that those hours we spent together transformed each and all of us, individually and as a community, forever.
—Carol Zinn, SSJ

“I still remember that first conversation. I knew this space was different and open.” —Kendra Avila

“The celebrations of slow, deep, real community building give me hope.” —Chris Chavez

“One of us younger people said "All I want is to transform myself in the context of community to change the world.” I think it was Sr. Nancy Schreck who responded by saying: "…That's religious life." Tingles!!!” —Casper ter Kuile

One of the sisters — I think it was Sr Carol Zinn — was asked by one of the millennials how she was able to stick with the commitment of a vowed life. She responded, "In the commitment, there is freedom." The day before, I had gone on my first date with the man who would become my husband. When he texted to ask how our day with the sisters had gone, I shared that quote with him. A premonition of the vows we ourselves would make! (Also I love that we share a 5-year anniversary!) —Angie Thurston

looking toward the future: hopes for N&N

“My hope is that more people get to experience the power of these conversations, that new collaborative experiments continue to happen, and that the charism(s) are proactively shared and new communities form.” —Casper ter Kuile

“Within an atmosphere of respect and a sincere openness to learn from one another, this intergenerational community serves as a model for all those looking for ways to break down the assumed walls between "the other.” The magic of Nuns and Nones is found in the relationship between those involved in this energy and ecosystem. May this remain the focus for the many years ahead.” —Margarita Solis Deal
